Trip To Greenwood B.C. on July 19, 2013

Well…..I am back in the saddle, so to speak….dusted off the friendly confines of my blog…did some sweeping, rearranging….gave the blog a new face lift….am looking to get down, picking up from I left off.

Wife and I took a drive today to her ole’ stompin’ grounds of Greenwood, B.C. to visit her parents…..my in-laws and brother in-law.

Further down the road in Midway is where I called home from 1972 to 1982 and then again from 1983 to 1991.

I digress….that reminiscing side of me gets me off course every time.

Anywhoos……

……As we drove, the drive was uneventful….sky blue with just a slight trace of cloud at points…..listening to the new country music on the XM satellite radio.

I took a couple of pictures with my Samsung S2 phone Instagram app.

My wife is always surprised at my mood change when I leave my community of Trail for a few hours.

I get a little happy…..giddy perhaps….let my hair fly in the wind…the little I have…and become one with the side of myself that can be fun, relaxed and personable….I know, right?….who figured!!!!

As we went through Christina Lake, unfortunately Christina was preoccupied at the time and we couldn’t hook up for a conversation….understandable as the lake was already busy with water skiers and boats; people moving about and getting busy with a new day just before 9 a.m.

As we were getting closer to Grand Forks, the wife informed me….wait…I am getting ahead of myself…..this trip to the in-laws is supposed to be a surprise…we did not let them know we were coming…..I missed mentioning that earlier…..the reason I bring it up now is, well,…my wife and I have a strange way of communicating….she tells me stuff at the last minute…..she is spontaneous and prone on changing things up at a moments notice….I am less spontaneous…..more of a planner, less prone on being spontaneous…..just saying….

Anywhoos…..

Wife just informed me, she wants me to put on my Facebook, “Coffee with brother in-law in 30 minutes” when we get to Grand Forks….so much for showing up unannounced and surprising them….kind of anti-climantic….just saying…

Oh no!…..We just saw a dead deer on the side of the road….just tugs at my softer, sympathetic, empathetic side….big words I know!…..and I know what they mean too!!!!

Sawyer Brown’s “Some Girls Do” is now playing….has the wife singing. I would whistle along to the tune…..kinda difficult though…I am missing certain teeth to make that work….that story is for a different time….suffice to say that those teeth are but a memory of past days and great times…..SEE what I mean about my reminiscing side…picks the strangest times to overwhelm me….just saying….

Ahhhhh……driving through the busy town of Grand Forks now….up Spencers’ Hill….missed Spencer by the way….nobody wants to be rundown for a conversation….traffic is good….clouds are more pronounced….logging truck passes us…..I remember my days at Pope & Talbot mill in Midway….was unforgettable work experience, especially on the green chain.

The green chain took a young man….instilled a little backbone, drive and ambition….who was frustrated, had poor social skills, and going through those teenage years….and MORE important….had a poor poker face….when it came to playing cards at lunch time, I tended to lose….just saying….

Anywhooos….I digress….

As we were closing in to our destination, it occurred to me that we would quickly find out how welcome we would be….correction….the wife is always welcome…after all, I am the one who is married to THEIR daughter….I on the other hand…well, let’s say….I need to be not my usual jovial self….I need to be better at this time of all times, as my father in-law is not well and is recovering from some health issues….and well, you know….it’s a little stressful and emotional at the ole’ homestead….just saying.

I am hoping the visit goes well….if my wife and mother in-law don’t strangle me…..and the brother in-law doesn’t show me the door between my eyes……what are the chances, right?….c’mon…..really??

I did it….I knew I could….really….I did….was on my best behaviour for a few hours…took some pictures….was served lunch….things could not have gone better…..well….no, I won’t go there….I had no doubts at all it would turn out as well as it did….honest…I didn’t….as for others…well……

……the traffic is a little heavier….lots of campers as we head back to Trail…is just after 1 p.m. ……the temperature is hotter, the AC feels just right….and in a short time we will be back in the big city….well, bigger than Greenwood, the smallest city in Canada….so THEY say…..

As we passed Wilgress Lake, we came upon a serious accident….two motor bikes, a Telus truck, a camper parked on the side of the road….an ambulance from Greenwood on the road…..a motorcycle in the ditch….no clue what happened….too slow on the uptake to get a pic….wow….another ambulance…from Grand Forks direction passes us….now a Grand Forks fire department first responder passes us: time l:18 p.m. …..now a police care…..no lights on. Things are developing.

Now another Grand Forks fire department vehicle, with lights flashing as we pass it on the long stretch to Grand Forks….more serious than we had thought.

Interesting turn of events, from the uneventful trip to Greenwoood….the trip back to Trail was becoming very eventful….who figured…just saying…

Expected a good, uneventful day….good drive…good visit…some sun…good times…catching up on the last couple of weeks…strengthening those family ties….adding to the memories…sharing a few laughs….taking a few pictures for posterity for those days we would say, “Remember when…..Yeah, remember when…..”

……Ooops….sorry ‘bout that….you’ll learn how quick my mind can wander….reflect….just saying…

Too much???……Yeah….maybe…I can babble….was told that years ago by an old school mate…Ticia McNeil….I think she meant it as a criticism….but I took it as a compliment…..I was a very shy, introverted guy….who knew that would change….change it did….just saying….

,,,,I can go on….and on….and on…..just like the energizer bunny….really….bad illustration?…..hmmm…you’re not expected to agree with me….honest….I won’t take it personally….this time….if you disagree, just saying….

And when you think this is coming to an end….go figure….there is a fallen tree across both lanes of the road…2 miles….yes, miles…not kilometres…miles….from the Paulson Summit….some great people out with their muscles and vehicle to clear the road of the fallen tree, and get us back on our way….of course, I took advantage of the circumstances and took a picture….what??….

….well…this is the end of my first commentary in over two years on my improved blog….you can look forward to more….I know…I know…I hear the groans…..take care…..keep smiling…may the force be with you….work safe…drive safe….be good to each other….just saying….

Signed,

Me
